A DAY IN HISTORY

It is February 17, 2005.

Hitch, Million Dollar Baby and Boogeyman are the top three movies at the box office today. Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" tops the Billboard Hot 100 and is playing on the radio right now. The video game Legendz: Sign of Necrom was released this morning for Game Boy Advance, and Moms picked it up for your snotty little brother, but she forgot to get the "Soul Adaptor" accessory, and the game is useless without it.

Little bro has been screaming and kicking the walls in his room since she got back from the store.

It's been a pretty crappy day, but now you're at historic Huff Hall to watch your Fighting ILLINI wrestling team take on the Nerdwestern Wildcats. It's a blowout, and you relish every second and every takedown as the Orange and Blue wrap up a 29-6 win.

During the dual, the ILLINI ended up beating three future Wildcat NCAA finalists, two of whom would become NCAA champions. What a beautiful, elegant curb-stomping. Here's a link to the recap at FightingILLINI.com, and here's the box score:

174: #4 Pete  Friedl (ILL) dec. #3 Jake Herbert (NU), 11-4 (3-0)

184: #3 Brian  Glynn (ILL) dec. #18 Mike Tamillow (NU), 9-4 (6-0)

197: #14 Matt Delguyd (NU) dec. #13 Tyrone  Byrd (ILL), 4-3 2 ot (6-3)

133: #3 Mark  Jayne (ILL) major dec. Daniel Quintela (NU), 13-5 (13-6)

141: #19 Cassio  Pero (ILL) dec. Ryan Lang (NU), 11-4 (16-6)

149: #12 Anton  Dietzen (ILL) major dec. Jimmy Kim (NU), 9-1 (20-6)

165: #11 Donny  Reynolds (ILL) dec. Nick Hayes (NU), 5-2

TEAM INFO

The ILLINI are predicted to win the match 27-7 by Wrestlestat.com. The Wildcats are 2-2 on the season so far, and they were on the road to Purdue while the ILLINI was grappling at home with Ohio State. Northwestern beat NIU (29-8), lost to Little Rock (10-29) and then beat Cal Poly (29-14), and yesterday, lost to Purdue (13-31). Here's a box score from that match:

Purdue 31, Northwestern 13
125: No. 1 Matt Ramos (PUR) over Dedrick Navarro (NU) (TF 20-4 5:00)
133: Dustin Norris (PUR) over Massey Odiotti (NU) (Dec 13-7)
141: No. 33 Greyson Clark (PUR) over No. 10 Chris Cannon (NU) (Dec 13-9)
149: Sam Cartella (NU) over Isaac Ruble (PUR) (MD 14-0)
157: No. 7 Joey Blaze (PUR) over Jacob Bostelman (NU) (MD 11-3)
165: No. 19 Maxx Mayfield (NU) over No. 33 Stoney Buell (PUR) (TF 17-2 6:23)
174: No. 26 Brody Baumann (PUR) over Aiden Vandenbush (NU) (TF 17-2 3:35)
184: Orlando Cruz (PUR) over Matt Kubas (NU) (TF 19-4 6:04)
197: No. 13 Evan Bates (NU) over No. 30 Ben Vanadia (PUR) (MD 8-0)
285: Hayden Filipovich (PUR) over Dirk Morley (NU) (Fall 2:29)

INDIVIDUAL MATCHUPS

125. #169 CAELAN RILEY vs. #47 Dedrick Navarro. This is a match that Caelan Riley needs to win, as Navarro is a redshirt Freshman with a 13-12 career mark. The Wildcat has some nice wins and first-year-starting hiccups, but Wrestlestat.com is predicting a 13-3 major for the bad guy.

133. #4 LUCAS BYRD vs. #72 Massey Odiotti. He is the Wyrd, and the Wyrd is Byrd. The Wildcat is 7-8 this season after an 11-18 true Freshman campaign. Wrestlestat.com thinks this'll be a decision. Yeah, right, if Lucas wants it to be a decision.

141. #15 DANNY PUCINO vs. #39 Chris Cannon. The algorithm has the ILLINI winning, and that's probably because Danny's having a great season and Cannon's only 1-2 on the year. He didn't wrestle in  the Midlands, but he took to the mat yesterday almost giving up bonus to Greyson Clark of Purdue. The nerds have two other guys at this weight who Danny would kill, including the guy he horsed over for a pin in the dual in Evanston.

149. #7 KANNON WEBSTER vs. #38 Sam Cartella. The Wildcat had a nice 25-9 redshirt season, but it's been rougher seas this campaign. Among his five losses are L's to the #83, #32 and #31 rated wrestlers. Kannon is predicted to pick up the major.

157. #44 JASON KRAISSER vs. #23 Trevor Chumbley. Wrestlestat.com is predicting an 8-4 win for the Wildcat. Unless Cardiac Kraisser comes through in the clutch, that seems like it could happen. Let's wait and see how the first six scrambles turn out, though, before we jump to any hasty conclusions. Chumbley didn't wrestle in yesterday's dual against Purdue. It was #82 Jacob Bostelman who took the loss.

165. #17 BRAEDEN SCOLES vs. #27 Maxx Mayfield. We have an 8-4 prognosticated win for Scoles in this one. Mayfield has a nice 13-4 record on the season, but he lost to the #40 kid from Hofstra and has had no significant wins so far this year. Chris Moore won this match 6-5 in the dual in Evanston. Mayfield was 2-0 against Danny Braunagel a couple of years ago. That sounds like injury-hampered Brawny to us. The Wildcat had a very strong showing yesterday against Stoney Buell of Purdue, so Scoles will need to shake off whatever's bothering him quick.

174. #27 DANNY BRAUNAGEL vs. #95 Aiden Vandenbush. We're not sure why Wrestlestat.com has Vandenbush starting as they have #60 Joseph Martin on the roster, and he's not taking a redshirt. Vandenbush did wrestle in the last dual, but Martin got the call for the first two. The algorithm gives the Brawlnagel a major over Vandenbush and a two-point decision over Martin.

184. #15 EDMOND RUTH vs. #94 Jon Halvorsen. Wrestlestat.com points to an 8-4 win for Ruthless. The wildcat is 6-7 on the season, 23-40 for his career. Halvorsen is 1-9 in Big Ten duals, and two of those losses were to Zac Braunagel and Matt Wroblewski. Yesterday, #226 Matt Kubas laid his ranking and 0-4 record on the line against Purdue, and he took another loss.

197. #14 ZAC BRAUNAGEL vs. #28 Evan Bates. Bates has a 49-39 career record, but he has been 5-11 in conference duals. This'll be a revenge match for the Brawlnagel, however, as Bates did beat Zac's "little" brother. The Wildcat qualified for the NCAAs last season with a 12-13 record and even beat a kid from the clothing store Franklin & Marshal while there. The algorithm predicts a 10-5 win for Zac.

285. #13 LUKE LUFFMAN vs. #129 Dirk Morley. The Wildcat has a 5-18 career mark, and it would surprise us if Luuuke doesn't do better than the predicted major decision. This could get ugly quick.

Comments

  1. Really weird results last night. Kannon didn't look right at all and Scoeles lets people on his leg too easily. Great job by Byrd and Kaiser and Ruth did his typical thing. left there very disappointed. Hopefully they take it out on NW tomorrow

  2. Thankfully, they did take it out on Northwestern, Huff, but that was not peak ILLINI against OSU. For some reason we have 60% Kannon Webster, who is good enough to make very good wrestlers work hard for a win, but I like 100% Webster. Is it the cut or the flu?
