Winners of the B1G Tournament Prop Bet Contest!


Congratulations to our winners in the B1G Tournament Prop Bet Contest! 

We had entries on Twitter, on Intermatforums.com, at ILLINOISMatmen.com and in DMs. First prize and two ILLINI Wrestling Blog and Forum and Beyond t-shirts go to Significant ACC Bias on Twitter (nine correct answers and did a slightly better job on the team standings). 




Second prizes and one t-shirt apiece are hereby awarded to every poster who got at least eight of the prop bets right. These include: FSL ILLINI (9 correct answers but sucked at the team race, ya homer), Ionel on Intermat (9 correct answers but didn't have a tie breaker with team standings), Mr. PeanutButter on Intermat (8 correct answers, got first four teams right in team standings) and Fighting Scot on ILLINOISMatmen (8 correct answers but did a brilliant job on the team race). 


A reminder of what the prop bets were:


1.  Spencer Lee will get a first-period pinfall in his first match at the 2023 B1G tournament (No, he did not.)

2.  A team point will be deducted from Iowa's score during the 2023 B1G tournament (No, somehow Terrence and Phillip managed not to give up a team point.)



3.  During the first commercial break after the beginning of the finals broadcast, there will be a commercial selling cars or trucks. (Unfortunately, I don't have BTN in South Carolina, so I didn't see the broadcast. I watched the re-broadcast on BTN+ and it had no commercials, so everybody got this right.)

4.  Carter Starocci will not give up a point in his first two matches during the 2023 B1G tournament (No. He gave up points.)

5.  Nebraska will have three or more finalists at the 2023 B1G tournament (Yes. They did.)

6.  ILLINOIS will have a finalist at the 2023 B1G tournament (No. Unfortunately not.)

7.  Maryland will have two or more semi-finalists at the 2023 B1G tournament (No.)

8.  During broadcast of the finals, the cameras will catch a nervous coach with his finger in his nose (This was close. Tom Brands went to his nose multiple times during the Spencer Lee interview, but didn't have penetration. Also, the PSU coaching staff during the Haines match had their hands cupped around their mouths the whole time, but you couldn't tell if they dug for gold. I suspect they did, but have no proof. Clever fellows!)

[NOTA BENE: I actually won $100 during a Super Bowl with this bet. The wager was that one of the coaches would go spelunking for a clingberry during the last five minutes of the game, and dadgumit!, Bill Cowher came through for me!]

9.  Taylor Lamont will wrestle and beat Kyle Burwick during the 2023 B1G tournament (No. They missed each other by one match in the 9th-place bracket.)

10. The last match of the 2023 B1G tournament will involve Spencer Lee (No. But shoulda.)

11. The last match of the 2023 B1G tournament will involve Yianni Diakomihalis (No. Trick question.)

12. At least two champions of the 2023 B1G tournament will do backflips or somersaults of some kind (No. Not even one. Celebrations were muted.)

ILLINI Wrestle-off Results, Seth Mendoza and Baby Wrestlers!

THE REASON FOR THE WRESTLE-OFFS The ILLINI had their first wrestle-off in years yesterday at Huff Hall. The likely reasons for this are discussed in a preceding post here . The long and short of it is that the Brawlnagels are likely going to use the Olympic Redshirts that they earned over the Summer. Additionally, 2xAA Lucas Byrd is still injured.  In fact, Byrd is the Wyrd was at Super 32.  What a great ambassador for the ILLINI! He's instantly recognizable and relatable and fun and you can bet the kids love him. Since the image below was on IMAR's instagram account, can we assume that he led this expedition?  RESULTS OF THE WRESTLE-OFFS We don't have the full results for the wrestle-offs but were told that the ultimate winners included the following: Justin Cardani at 125; it was reported that Anthony Madrigal looked great, and that Kole Brower looked tough, but it was Madrigal who came out on top for the 133 spot.  Danny Pucino won; while Kannon Webster beat Jake Harrier

Clues to the 2023-2024 Fighting ILLINI Lineup? And Wrestle-Offs!

We found a clue to this season's Fighting ILLINI lineup at Trackwrestling. That organization keeps records on who on the various NCAA teams has certified at the various weights. Because this is the first cert of the year, most of the guys are above their likely weights that they will end up wrestling.  Most significantly, though, there were some omissions from the certification process. Will these omissions mean that the individuals won't wrestle during the season? Hmmmm. We will be interviewing Coach Poeta before the season starts so we'll have a better idea about what's going on.  In the meantime, who is missing from this Trackwrestling list : If you said Zac and Danny Braunagel, you win! Additionally, Lucas Byrd is not listed as "eligible," whatever that means.
