Mike Poeta's Ridiculous Mostly Unexplainable Crazy Voodoo-Like Scramble/Takedown

Gregor Gillespie is an NCAA wrestling and UFC legend. He won the championship at 149 during the 2007 NCAA tournament, beating former champ Dustin Schlatter, future champ Jordan Leen and three-time AA Josh Churella along the way. Gillespie won 152 matches for Edinboro and was a four-time All American. His MMA record is 14-1, and he's currently fighting in the UFC. Mike Poeta started off as a 165-pounder for the Fighting ILLINI--taking one for the team in the process--before shifting down to 157 for his last three seasons. He became one of the most successful wrestlers in school history and was a member of ILLINOIS' 2005 Big Ten championship squad. Individually, Poeta was a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA finalist and two-time Big Ten champion. He is now Coach of the University of ILLINOIS's wrestling team. You are seeing a snippet of a match from the Las Vegas Invitational back in December of 2007. The previous year, Gillespie won his national title at 149, while Poeta finished third at 157. Three things set this scramble/takedown apart from others. First, it involved very high-level wrestling. There are seven All-American finishes and three NCAA finals on that mat. Second, the call from the Flo Wrestling announcer might be the best wrestling call ever screamed into a microphone. Third, if you look closely on the right side of the screen during the scramble, you can see the head referee actually make one swipe for back points before calling it off when the tables were suddenly and unexpectedly turned. 2. Hi Huff! Thanks! These are fun to make. I'm now working on an arm drag video, which was inspired by a Sumo match I saw yesterday. More fun!

I totally dig what you're saying about use of the word "legend." Everybody seems to have their own standard. To me, anybody with 15 MMA fights and 14 wins meets the standard, especially if they've won "Fight of the Night" at some point.

Now, I know there is a vast difference in their respective opponents, but Randy Couture has an overall 19-11 record, while BJ Penn won 16 and lost 14.

Someday I'll post about my MMA training. I ended up chickening out, but there's at least a couple good stories. Cheers, Brother!
