Kannon Webster Wins the Maryville Open
Over the weekend, ILLINI recruit Kannon Webster (Washington High School) accomplished something remarkable. He won the Maryville Open.
Webster scored an 11-4 victory in the finals over Taylor Jokerst of Maryville University. He scored on two spin-behinds, a single leg and a single that he converted into a double. Significantly, he was smart enough to score takedowns near the end of two periods and then ride his opponent out.
Jokerst is a grad student, multi-time D2 Academic All American and a four-year starter.
Kannon Webster's big win, though, came in the semifinals, as he beat NCAA Qualifier and four-year starter Cayden Rooks of Indiana. I've seen it reported as a 3-0 win for Webster, but it was really 4-0.
Kannon scored on a single leg in the first period, then rode out the Hoosier for the remaining 1:12. In the second period, Rooks made the mistake of choosing bottom.
Webster rode him out.
He then escaped in the third for his third point, and with over three minutes of riding time, that made it 4-0.
Congratulations and GO ILLINI!!!
By the time Kannon Webster and his fellow stud recruits get to Champaign-Urbana, the ILLINI will be so salty dual meets will be PG-13.
