Armbar at the Armory Recap

This will be a short recap of the Buffalo and NC State duals, which were part of the Armbar at the Armory promotion put on by Journeymen Wrestling. The recap will be short because the matches were pretty disappointing except for a few bright spots. I'm sure the wrestlers have already heard it from their coaches on the way home.

197: Zac Braunagel (ILL) defeated Eli Sherren (UB) (Dec 12-5)

HWT: Matt Wroblewski (ILL) defeated Greg Hodulick (UB) (MD 10-2)

The Buffalo Bulls team is full of long drinks of water, and they were well conditioned. I know Renteria and Pucino were recovering from injuries, so their conditioning was going to be impacted. A recent video of the team on center court during a basketball game showed Maximo in a walking boot. How he was able to wrestle at all, I don't know. Whether it’s the flu, colds, some other illness or saving themselves for NC State, the rest of the ILLINI team was also slow.

One of the best aspects of the evening was watching Kole Brower, Renteria, Davenport and Ed Ruth get their first varsity dual wins for ILLINOIS. There were some fans in Orange in the front row, and that was nice to see.

THE NC STATE DUAL

125: Jarrett Trombley (NCST) defeated Maximo Renteria (ILL) (Dec 5-1)

133: Lucas Byrd (ILL) defeated Troy Hohman (NCST) (Fall 4:34)

141: Ryan Jack (NCST) defeated Danny Pucino (ILL) (MD 14-4)

149: Jackson Arrington (NCST) defeated Kevon Davenport (ILL) (MD 10-2)

157: Ed Scott (NCST) defeated Anthony Federico (ILL) (MD 15-3)

165: Danny Braunagel (ILL) defeated Alex Faison (NCST) (Dec 9-3)

174: Edmond Ruth (ILL) defeated Brock DelSignore (NCST) (Dec 7-3)

184: Trent Hidlay (NCST) defeated Dylan Connell (ILL) (TF 23-7)

197: Isaac Trumble (NCST) defeated Zac Braunagel (ILL) (Dec 11-4)

HWT: Owen Trephan (NCST) defeated Matt Wroblewski (ILL) (MD 10-2)

The announcer for the Wolfpack dual was on point. I was going to accuse him of stealing my copyrighted material, but he was a freaking encyclopedia. That MOFO did his homework! I especially liked his story about Lucas Byrd getting these words of wisdom: "You don’t have to do this, you get to do this." Lucas Byrd was dynamite with the pin, which was a nice warm-up for his NWCA All-Star match coming up. Another bright spot was the double winners, including the ILLINI 133's, Danny Braunagel and Edmond Ruth.

A couple of observations about some brain freezes: Kevon Davenport should be barred from trying to throw in a match unless he is ahead by seven or behind by four or more. An exception can be made if he has tried each of these techniques: A double, a single, an ankle pick, a shrug-by and one other. He has too many good takedowns to put himself in a six-point hole a full 1/3 of his matches. Then, Zac Braunagel showed he can fight with the big boys, but two brain freezes handed four short time points to his opponent.

The ILLINI need to get fully healthy and remember those wise words: "You don't have to do this, you get to do this."
