Championship Weekend Update for ILLINI Recruits and the IRTC
Over the weekend, ILLINI Wrestling fans had to divide their attention between the US Open in Las Vegas and Greco State in Dekalb, ILLINOIS. There were a lot of matches won by ILLINI recruits and IRTC regulars. Then, there was IRTC-adjacent Wyatt Medlin (pictured above with the point man in his ILLINI recruitment).
WILL BAYSINGAR AT GRECO STATE
Adding to his championship at ILLINOIS Freestyle State was Will Baysingar (pictured at right), who came away with a matching Greco crown. He's now qualified to represent the state in both disciplines.
It seems that both Will and Kannon Webster are in growth spurts, as they've both moved up in weight. With each having a year left in high school, where do they end up? The ILLINI have an amazing legacy in the middle weights (Poeta, IMAR, Tirapelles, etc.)
Joining him on the Freestyle squad will be ILLINI recruit Kole Brower.
Additionally, IRTC-adjacent Wyatt Medlin (pictured at top) won a Greco crown in his age division. You could say, well, duh, but they still have to wrestle the matches.
THE IRTC AT THE US OPEN
Max Nowry was a champion again in Greco at 55kg. He was already qualified for World Team Trials. Joe Rau at 97kg won another silver medal in a prestigious American tournament in Freestyle, adding to his haul from the Bill Farrell Open. West Cathcart also won a silver medal in Greco at heavyweight, while Kamal Bey won his first few matches before having to injury forfeit out.
Some folks like Zane Richards and Tanner Farmer were already qualified for World Team Trials because of previous results.
ILLINI hero Isaiah Martinez dunked on David McFadden early, throwing his back to the mat three times in a row, but then gave up a tricky cradle and lost by fall. After winning a match in the consolation bracket, he sustained an injury and had to forfeit out. Unfortunately for IMAR, he did not finish in the top seven, so he'll still need to qualify for the WTT.
As always please correct me if I make a mistake. That could also include mistakes of omission: What did I miss? GO ILLINI!!!
