Partial Recap of the Nebraska Dual

I'm still waiting for BTN+ to replay the entire BTN broadcast of the dual. There is a video on Youtube with "selected matches" from the dual, but it doesn't show Lucas Byrd's or Danny Braunagel's win or Joe Robert's tight match with Peyton Robb. The video does show this:

How Chad Red avoids near fall points and pinfalls in Lincoln is a mystery to me. Nearfall happened last time in Lincoln, and Duncan did not get the points. This year, there was a pinfall.

After watching that last replay during the official's review, Shane Sparks says, "Too close for comfort if you're Chad Red." That was very diplomatic. During the official's review, at least we got a nice shot of Jeremy Hunter, then Ed Ruth, Lucas Byrd and Mike Poeta:

Red wins, but this was a recovering Dylan Duncan. I think he was sick during the Wisconsin match, and was recovering here. He didn't take a real serious shot the whole match, and he didn't take one against the Badger. I remember Duncan taking four or five shots in one period against Luke Pletcher. I think it's safe to say that he was sick but is now recovering. This at least gives me hope that he will recover and have plenty of time to train for the post-season.

Next on the BTN youtube video was the Kanzler/Lovett match. About that, I will say just a few things. Christian was the recipient of three bogus stalling calls. Then, there was another beautiful attempt at a Judo throw:

The rest of the team could benefit from learning this technique. You can instill fear in your opponent's heart! By the way, the "selected matches" video of the dual on youtube shows Dylan Duncan, Christian Kanzler, DJ Shannon, Zac Braunagel and Matt Wroblewski. Here's that video:

DJ Shannon had a really nice win against Wisconsin, then faced last year's third-place finisher in Mikey Labriola. The Husker barely got a major decision. I would've liked to have seen DJ trust his condition and trust his offense. He can complicate a match against the very best if he starts believing in himself.

That's exactly what Zac Braunagel did against two-time AA Taylor Venz. The Husker shoots a quick double but gets stuffed, then, still earlyish in the first period, the Brawlnagel does this:

One takedown in the first period was not enough for Brawny--as you could hear Coach Poeta in the background shouting, "Keep up the offense!" This followed:

Coach Poeta, probably referring to their scouting report and plan for the match, shouts, "IT'S WORKING, ZAC BRAUNAGEL!"

That's three takedowns of the two-time AA in the first period. Venz gets a takedown of his own in the second, but then Zac jacks up double unders and gets another takedown. Jim Gibbons is giddy with excitement, noting each takedown on some kind of takedown punch list, while Shane Sparks says, "Braunagel with an array of offense."

Later, "It's a good day for the Braunagels in Lincoln."

Matt Wroblewski is still obviously working on conditioning. That, and growing his shoulders and biceps, is what he'll want to do from now until the post-season. This was a different Eric Schultz, as he went after the major decision because the team score was still tight.

He could only manage a 6-2 win.

In response to Huff Hall's comment and questions in the previous post: (1) It looks like Duncan is feeling better, but he's still not back. He was a ghost on the sideline after his match. I stopped the video on a couple of occasions, and he was as pale as a dead person. (2) Cardani was in his warmups, but they didn't show 125 or the introductions, so I don't know much more than that.

My speculation is that something is bothering him, and Coach Poeta decided that since the outcome of the dual had been decided, give Dane Durlacher some more mat time and let Cardani heal or recover.

I'll be back with another recap and conclusion once BTN+ puts up the full dual meet. In the meantime, here's the box score:

125: Jerimiah Reno (NEB) over Dane Durlacher (ILL) (MD 10-2)

133: Lucas Byrd (ILL) over Dominick Serrano (NEB) (MD 12-4)

Comments

  1. Both Braunagel boys wrestled terrific offensive matches, loved to see that. Byrd was his usual dominating self. Kanzler Roberts and Wroblewski wrestled hard and were in the matches, Luffman let another one slip away and yes Duncan got screwed. Somethings up with Cardani as Durlacher was in at 125 again. Maybe the coaches grew as tired as the rest of us watching him helplessly dive at a leg and get stuck

    1. You must have BTN, Huff. I'm jelly. I still haven't seen Little Brawny's win or Byrd's win or Roberts' match with Robb. I'm keen to see them! Guess I should check to see if the whole dual has been uploaded yet. Cheers!
